The Anywhere Travel Companion (ATC) is much more an appliance than a PDA. This device offers a new interface sporting large input buttons which are optimized for in flight use. With and a big, bright 4.3" screen, incredible sharp high resolution screen, plenty of memory, and a fast dual core processor; this is a very powerful machine. It has a bigger, brighter screen and a smaller, lighter case than anything you have ever seen. There is no software to install just turn it on and it works right out of the box.
If you want the functionality of a PDA the iPAQ 210 is a very good choice. It offers a 4" display, Windows Mobile 6 and a fast 624MHz XScale PXA310 processor.
New to the line-up is the Anywhere Map Duo. This device offers the ultimate in performance for piston aircraft and has won over many corporate pilots with it's plethora of features and beautiful display. The Duo offers amazing sunlight readability, 1GB RAM, 1.33GHz processor and a 32GB solid state drive. Duo Dimensions: 8.27" x 4.61" x 0.89"
If space in your cockpit allows for a large tablet, consider the premium-size view of the Motion LE1700. Motion tablets ship with a special outdoor transflective screen called View Anywhere. Motion tablets are powered by an Intel 1.2 GHz Pentium and run Windows XP.
Mission :
If you plan to use Pocket Plates, you will need, at the very least, an additional 512 MB of storage; either an SD or a Compact Flash card.
Large format screens like the Motion tablets permit viewing all of an approach plate.
Bluetooth:
Bluetooth is wireless communication between devices that cuts down on the overall number of wires to the PDA. To use this option you’ll need a Bluetooth-equipped PDA plus a Bluetooth peripheral such as a GPS, XM weather receiver, or XRX. The Sentinel Blue or Garmin GPS10 can be located anywhere in the cockpit. Although Bluetooth can be installed as an add-on to many PDAs, it is more practical and less expensive to start with a Bluetooth-enabled device. The Dell Axim X51v, iPAQ 5915, iPAQ 4705 and iPAQ 2490 offer Bluetooth.
Recommendations:
The Anywhere Travel Companion is a wonderful handheld navigation device. Anyone looking for a simple yet powerful handheld should consider this unit, especially if you had use for the integrated street navigation.
If you have a little more room in your budget, the Anywhere Map Duo is clearly a premium offering. Even with a large 7" display it fits nicely on the yoke of most aircrat. This versitile Windows based tablet offers excellent performance and comes standard with Pocket Plates 3.n
For PDAs we recommend the iPAQ 210. The discontinued Dell Axim X51V, HP iPAQ 4705, iPAQ 5915 and HP 2490 are fine systems and work well if you can find one. We have found iPAQs and Axims to be the most reliable and sturdiest of the popular PDAs. Their screen quality is excellent and they are fully upgradable to weather or Pocket Plates.
Altitude considerations:
Manufacturers caution against using traditional hard disk drives at pressure altitudes above 10,000 ft. This restriction does not apply to solid-state devices like the ATC, PDAs, or the Anywhere Map Duo.
